The National Military Museum

The National Military Museum was created as a result of the merger of the Legermuseum (Army Museum) in Delft and the Militair Luchtvaart Museum (Military Aviation Museum) in Soest. The Army and Air Force decided to build a joint new museum to secure both collections for the future. In addition, the Marines Museum in Den Helder and the Marine Museum in Rotterdam were placed in a joint foundation. The establishment of the Stichting Koninklijke Defensiemusea (Royal Defence Museums Foundation) was a fact. It is the Museums wish to keep alive the history of the Dutch soldier throughout the centuries by creating a bridge between society and armed forces. For this reason the Museum has been building its collection since 1913. Currently its collection contains more than 300,000 objects. This makes the Museum the visual memory of Dutch military history par excellence.
